The address is part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/global.wharton.upenn.edu\/global-modular-courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Modular Course<\/a>\u00a0on \u2018Sustainable Growth in ASEAN\u2019. Speaking at the University Lounge in the Singapore Management University, Sukanto Tanoto candidly shared his experiences, struggles and how he overcame various challenges. The common threads of lifelong learning and overcoming adversity run deeply in the career and life of Sukanto Tanoto. Sukanto Tanoto called it a \u201cscary moment\u201d. At that point in time, he had USD 2 billion dollars worth of projects in Indonesia and China that he had to see through.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sukanto Tanoto  - An Entrepreneur&#039;s Journey Part 6\/9: Managing Crisis\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/264Jy7IWSkk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mr Tanoto raised the example of \u5371\u673a (wei ji), which refers to crisis in Chinese. For him, in a crisis, there is danger \u5371\u9669 (wei xian) as well as opportunity \u673a\u4f1a (ji hui). With perseverance, grit and a good support network of colleagues and family, he weathered the storm. He took about three to four years to overcome the crisis and wasted no time on business growth and expansion. He looked to China and Brazil and ventured into the specialty cellulose and viscose staple fibre industry. He focused his diversification on the upstream without losing sight on expanding to occupy strategic nodes on the value-chain. His business emphasis is not about volume, but quality, sustainability and positive impact to other businesses and communities.
