APRIL Group<\/a> received plaudits at the Indonesia Green Awards on May 21, 2016 for its commitment to\u00a0the Restorasi Ekosistem Riau project and implementation of the Fire-Free Village Programme.<\/p>\n

Its Indonesia operations PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (PT RAPP) received two awards for biodiversity development and fire prevention.<\/p>\n

Organised by The La Tofi School of CSR, the Indonesia Green Awards<\/a> celebrates efforts and achievements in environmental stewardship in Indonesia.<\/p>\n

Now into its seventh edition, this year\u2019s Awards at Taman Tebet, Jakarta, shone the spotlight on policies, measures and grassroots initiatives for fire prevention.\u00a0This follows last year’s\u00a0widespread forest fires, but\u00a0government, NGO, community and corporate stakeholders have since stepped up efforts to prevent similar environmental catastrophes from occurring again.<\/p>\n

RER Honoured at Awards<\/h2>\n

APRIL Group Corporate Affairs Deputy Director\u00a0Dian Novarina received the award for biodiversity development on the company’s behalf for the Restorasai Ekosistem Riau<\/a>\u00a0(RER) project. Late last year, APRIL Group\u00a0announced it would\u00a0more than double<\/a>\u00a0its restoration efforts under the RER project to 150,000 hectares. This move\u00a0takes\u00a0APRIL Group another step closer to its one-for-one conservation and restoration goal, in which one hectare of forest is conserved for every hectare of plantation.<\/p>\n

Fire-Free Village Programme<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Following a 2014 pilot with four\u00a0villages, APRIL Group launched<\/a> the Fire-Free Village Programme<\/a> with nine Riau villages in 2015<\/a>\u00a0to holistically and systematically prevent fires. The collaborative community-focused programme showed promise, and was expanded<\/a> to 20 villages in 2016<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

APRIL Group’s fire prevention campaign kicked into the next gear\u00a0when it became one of\u00a0four founding corporate members of the Fire-Free Alliance<\/a>, which scales up<\/a> the implementation of the Fire-Free Village Programme across a larger number of\u00a0communities.<\/p>\n

As the implementation of the Fire-Free Village Programme is very grassroots-focused, PT RAPP deployed a dedicated team of specialists and community engagement officers to orientate and onboard the participating villages. The 2015 programme saw a significant reduction in burnt areas by over 90%<\/a> from 2014 to 2015.<\/p>\n
