RGE<\/a> and its business groups have for many years been on the journey of becoming more sustainable companies; it was to institutionalise this endeavour that the RGE Forestry, Fibre, Pulp, and Paper Sustainability Framework<\/a> was launched in 2015. Since then, the framework has been adopted and adapted in every aspect of our operations. Two years on, the framework remains at the heart of\u00a0RGE<\/a>‘s sustainability journey. Here\u2019s a look back at the progress made in the past year:<\/p>\n

APRIL<\/strong><\/h2>\n

APRIL<\/a> received two awards at the Indonesia Green Awards 2017 <\/a>\u2013 in the “Biodiversity Development and Energy Efficiency\u201d and\u00a0“New and Renewable Energy Development\u201d categories. The awards provided further recognition for APRIL\u2019s commitment to sustainability. This was APRIL\u2019s third and fourth award in two years.<\/p>\n

An independent review of the Fire Free Village Programme (FFVP), conducted by Carbon Conservation in 2017<\/a>, noted a doubling in the number of villages covered, from 9 to 18, and a 38% increase in FFVP land coverage compared to 2015.<\/p>\n

Sateri<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Sateri\u2019s pulp sourcing policy<\/a>, first published on June 16, 2015, was updated to reflect a greater commitment to sustainability and conservation. Updates included a preference for FSC fibre, a call for the conservation of ancient and endangered forests,\u00a0 and a commitment to drive the development of new and alternative fibres through research.<\/p>\n

Bracell<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Bracell launched, in March 2017, its own sustainability policy<\/a>. Bracell\u2019s framework emphasises a compliance with rules and regulations, responsible work practices, environmental protection and conservation, development of local communities, transparency and accountability, impact identification and monitoring, and the reduction of carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

Asia Symbol<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Asia Symbol<\/a> was awarded the 2016 \u201cChina Excellent Corporate Citizen\u201d for innovation in CSR and environmental education. They have also invested RMB27 million (USD3.9 million) in desulfurisation and denitrification facilities to be ready by July 2017.<\/p>\n

Beyond the forestry, fibre and pulp & paper business groups, both Asian Agri<\/a> and Apical<\/a> were also recognised for their sustainability initiatives. Asian Agri was recognised in 2016 with the Company Performance Improvement Award (Green Category) by Indonesia\u2019s Minister of Environment and Forestry, Dr. Ir. Siti Nurbaya Bakar, M.Sc., while Apical launched its Sustainability Dashboard<\/a> and has been active in organising workshops for its suppliers and partners to raise awareness on sustainability and traceability.<\/p>\n

While much has been achieved in the past two years, there remains much to do. As RGE marks its 50th<\/sup> year of business this year, Vice-Chairman Bey Soo Khiang encouraged all of the need to press on with the journey if RGE is to soar even higher for decades more.<\/p>\n
