The 2018 Tanoto Scholars and Alumni Gathering in Singapore saw its largest attendance yet, with 62 scholars and representatives from the nation\u2019s top universities \u2013 Singapore Management University (SMU)<\/a>, Nanyang Technological University<\/a> and the National University of Singapore<\/a>, taking part in the event held at SMU.<\/p>\n

Tanoto Foundation<\/a> which funds the scholarships was founded<\/a> by RGE Chairman<\/a> Sukanto Tanoto<\/a> and his wife Tinah Bingei Tanoto. Apart from providing scholarships, the foundation also supports medical research in Singapore for diseases that are prevalent in Asia.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The event kicked off with welcome remarks by Bey Soo Khiang<\/a>, Chairman of the Tanoto Foundation Board of Governance and Vice-Chairman of RGE<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis gathering is an opportunity to bring together like-minded individuals and a community who share the Tanoto family\u2019s values of working hard and not giving up,\u201d he said. He hopes that the scholarship inspires students to continue to \u2018pay it forward\u2019 and do more good for the society.<\/p>\n

Participants learned more about how RGE business\u00a0 groups continue to improve lives by developing resources sustainably. They also received a better understanding of RGE’s\u00a0sustainability framework<\/a>, courtesy of Felicia Tang, RGE\u2019s Deputy Head of External Affairs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

One of the ways Tanoto scholars give back to the community is through Project Sukacita<\/a>, a student-initiated and student-led community service project that allows scholars from both Singapore and Indonesia to serve local communities in rural Indonesia.\u00a0Previous activities of Project Sukacita include health screenings, health awareness talks, spring cleaning and educational programmes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In preparation\u00a0 for the upcoming run in May, two students\u00a0shared their recent recce trip\u00a0in Kerinci, Indonesia. Now on its sixth year, Project Sukacita 2018 will feature an improved programme, incorporating the lessons learned from its past five<\/a> editions. This year is expected to be programme\u2019s biggest edition yet, with an expected attendance of over 40 participants from various universities.<\/p>\n
