According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org\/news\/one-garbage-truck-of-textiles-wasted-every-second-report-creates-vision-for-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one study<\/a>, one garbage truck of textiles (about 12 to 14 tonnes) is wasted every second. In 2017, the value of unused clothes exceeded US$36 billion. In addition to these, consumer demand for fast, cheap apparel continues to increase.<\/p>\n<p>While there already exists solutions to help consumers shift away from a throwaway lifestyle, companies are turning to responsible sourcing from more renewable sources and implementing innovation in the manufacturing process. This involves exploring alternative feedstock, making the process more closed-loop, reducing chemical usage and wastes, and accelerating the commercial implementation of trials, all the while maintaining high quality and affordability.<\/p>\n<p>To address the opportunities and challenges arising from these trends, RGE announced a US$200 million investment over the next 10 years to help fast and linear fashion become more circular and sustainable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8804\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rgei-2.hellopomelo.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Research-and-Innovation-for-Sustainable-Closed-Loop-Manufacturing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8804\" class=\"wp-image-8804 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/rgei-2.hellopomelo.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Research-and-Innovation-for-Sustainable-Closed-Loop-Manufacturing.jpg\" alt=\"Research and innovation are key to making fashion more circular and sustainable.\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8804\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Research and innovation are key to making fashion more circular and sustainable.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2019 Textile Sustainability Conference Highlights\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uGDcxY-BbSk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>A look at Highlights of the Textile Sustainability Conference 2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Towards Circularity and Sustainability in the Fashion Industry<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_8799\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rgei-2.hellopomelo.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Sustainable-fashion.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8799\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8799\" src=\"https:\/\/rgei-2.hellopomelo.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Sustainable-fashion-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Sustainable fashion\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8799\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sustainable fashion: Moving away from our resource-intensive, wasteful and waste-generating ways.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This announcement comes on the back of RGE Director Anderson Tanoto\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2019\/01\/fast-fashion-is-unsustainable-heres-what-we-need-to-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">World Economic Forum opinion piece<\/a>, which called for a move towards circularity and sustainability in an industry that is increasingly aware of its resource-intensive, wasteful and waste-generating ways.<\/p>\n<p>Similar calls are also being made across the industry, with additional focus on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.just-style.com\/comment\/eco-friendly-fashion-where-are-we-still-falling-short_id137135.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">embedding sustainability in the value chain<\/a> and advancing the agenda for producers to innovate for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationintextiles.com\/circular-fashion-closing-clothings-waste-loop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">closed-loop, regenerative textile manufacturing outcomes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Revealed ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/textileexchange.org\/event\/2019-textile-sustainability-conference-vancouver-british-columbia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Textile Exchange Sustainability Conference<\/a> in Vancouver, the investment will focus on three areas: Scaling up proven clean technology in fibre manufacturing; bringing pilot scale production to commercial scale; and increase R&amp;D in emerging frontier solutions. The investment is respectively apportioned 70:20:10.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bey Soo Khiang, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgei.com\/about\/governance-leadership\/bey-soo-khiang\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vice Chairman of RGE<\/a>, shares the reason for the investment, \u201cThis is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rgei.com\/attachments\/article\/1376\/20191016%20Bey%20Soo%20Khiang%20Textile%20Exchange%20Speech.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">strategic business growth area for RGE<\/a>.
