Plastic substitution

Overview

The bioeconomy starts here

Plastic pollution has emerged as one of the world’s most pressing environmental problems with eight million tons of plastic waste finding its way into the ocean every year.

We produce a wide range of sustainably-sourced products and raw materials that replace plastics. From paper and packaging to hygiene products and fabrics, we enable our customers to reduce their environmental footprint while providing products used by millions of people around the world every day.

Our contributions

Biodegradable packaging

About 40 per cent of plastic waste comes from packaging. Companies must respond to increasing demand for more sustainable alternatives while ensuring safety and quality, particularly for food packaging.

BoardOne, produced by APRIL in Indonesia and Asia Symbol in China, is our solution. It’s made from 100 per cent renewable fibres and ideal for food or high-end consumer packaging where strength, hygiene, resistance to moisture and formability matter most.

Most importantly, it’s completely biodegradable, providing a sustainable solution to single use plastics.

Wet wipes

Parents may rely on them, but as much as 90 per cent of the billions of wet wipes sold each year contain plastics. When flushed down the toilet they can block sewers, and release micro plastics which pollute marine environments.

Our wet wipes are fully biodegradable and free of plastics, meaning they break down in the environment naturally.

Our Eco Surecare label even produces a range of wet wipes designed specifically to be flushed without blocking drains, allowing for easier disposal.

Making fashion more sustainable

Synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon and acrylic are made of petroleum, and do not biodegrade. They make up around two thirds of all fibres produced annually, much of which will eventually find its way to landfills.

The viscose rayon and lyocell produced by Sateri and APR are sourced from sustainably managed plantations, and are 100% biodegradable. As the largest producer of viscose rayon and lyocell in the world, we’re working to increase the adoption of biodegradable fibre, while also helping rethink supply chains to increase recycling and move to a circular production process.

We’re helping tackle some of the greatest challenges facing our planet
