Sustainability
Sustainable aviation fuel
Overview
Cleaner skies start here
The aviation sector is responsible for 2-3 per cent of global carbon emissions. And those emissions are projected to climb 300 per cent by the middle of the century unless action is taken.
The industry has committed to net zero emissions by 2050, and is now challenged with finding sustainable solutions that can power planes while reducing environmental impact.
We’re transforming organic waste and used cooking oil into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) which can reduce carbon emissions by up to 80 per cent, helping the global transition towards sustainable aviation.
The challenge
Why sustainable aviation fuel
The aviation industry is committed to reach net zero by 2050, but many of the required technologies do not yet exist at commercial scale.
Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is cutting emissions by up to 80 per cent, today. It’s known as a drop-in fuel, meaning it works with existing planes and infrastructure.
Governments around the world are increasingly mandating that airlines blend traditional jet fuel with SAF to reduce emissions, cementing the role of this important fuel in the energy transition.
Our contributions
Apical joint venture with Moeve
Apical has established a joint venture with Moeve to construct the largest, second generation biofuels plant in Southern Europe.
The new plant will have the capacity to produce up to 500,000 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and/or renewable diesel annually, enabling the reduction of CO2 emissions by up to 80 per cent, as compared to traditional fuels.
One of the biggest challenges facing the scaling up of SAF production is access to feedstock. As a large, global, integrated processor of vegetable oils, Apical is able to efficiently and sustainably extract waste and residue from its supply chain, providing a reliable source of raw materials without competing with food and feed.
Transforming waste to value
Demand for SAF is outpacing supply, in large part due to limited access to feedstock. As the world’s second largest processor of vegetable oil, Apical is perfectly placed to take advantage of its global supply chain to collect organic waste and used cooking oil for use in SAF production.
