Fires have been absent for almost three years. Communities have been engaged and their members, given alternative livelihoods. These are several of the highlights in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rekoforest.org\/images\/multimedia\/Restorasi%20Ekosistem%20Riau%20Annual%20Report%202017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Riau Ecosystem Restoration&#8217;s (RER) first annual report<\/a>, released in April 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Guided by its pioneering approach of a four-phase model of peatland forest protection, creation and conservation using the landscape approach, RER is part of APRIL&#8217;s commitment to conserve one hectare for every hectare of plantation. To date, APRIL has fulfilled 83% of this goal, having 421,000 hectares of forest protected, conserved or restored vis-a-vis 480,000 hectares of plantations.<\/p>\n<p>In his foreword, RER Advisory Board Chairman Bey Soo Khiang said, &#8220;These achievements illustrate our model where RER is complemented by production forestry, which provides the financial resources to fund restoration, as well as the protection provided by an actively managed ring of fibre plantations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bey also noted that RER was a learning experience for everyone sharing that identifying the right tools and techniques for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aprildialog.com\/en\/2017\/11\/10\/restorasi-ekosistem-riau-taking-restoration-challenge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">community engagement and ecosystem restoration<\/a> did not come automatically. RER had to learn &#8220;how to best effectively implement the company&#8217;s production-protection approach in order to deliver economic, environmental and social benefits for the communities, the region, and the country,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8022\" src=\"https:\/\/rgei-2.hellopomelo.space\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/RER-Infographic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"798\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The report also includes the following highlights:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the discovery of the 300th bird species, the Blue-winged Pitta (Pitta Mollucensis), joining the other birds that were earlier identified in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rekoforest.org\/multimedia\/birds-of-the-kampar-peninsula-an-annotated-checklist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bird Report<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the identification of 718 species of flora and fauna, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rekoforest.org\/multimedia\/mammals-of-the-kampar-peninsula-an-annotated-checklist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">70 species of mammals<\/a>, 107 species of amphibians and reptiles, 89 species of fish, 112 types of tree and 40 non-tree species within the area<\/li>\n<li>the absence of hotspots and fires in the RER area in 2017<\/li>\n<li>steady progress in hydrological and forest restoration efforts, producing over 39,000 seedlings in nurseries which contain 70 different tree species<\/li>\n<li>the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rekoforest.org\/news\/rer-teams-restore-hydrology-one-dam-at-a-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closure of 9 old drainage canals<\/a> measuring 29.5km in length via 25 hand-built dams<\/li>\n<li>support for local communities and their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inside-rge.com\/rer-where-conservation-and-chilli-farming-meet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alternative livelihoods<\/a> such as farming, fishing and the gathering of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rekoforest.org\/news\/honey-program-sweetens-drive-to-restore-forest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forest honey<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Managing an area almost twice the size of Singapore, RER was established in 2013 and is a collaborative project that brings together private and public sector groups to protect, assess, restore and manage over 421,000 hectares of peatland forest on Indonesia\u2019s Kampar Peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Around 17,000 people live in the area surrounding RER, depending highly on the land for their livelihood. RER, along with stakeholders, works with communities to provide alternatives to traditional slash-and-burn agricultural practices, enabling communities to live sustainably.
